"Keep the Cape On" Photos

It was great seeing people's hysterical reactions to this guy at New York Comic Con. I can't wait to get a bunch finished so I can offer them up to everyone. In the meantime, here's a few more shots of this guy. He's about 5" tall to ear-tip (in scale with the other F.A.G.S.) with a 5.5" wingspan. Available soon!

New York Comic Con Coverage

Lots of thanks to Doomkick for doing a write up and posting photos of my booth at NYCC here.

Also, I had a chance to talk with The Gay Comic Geek at NYCC, you can see a portion of that conversation in his video here (around the 1:35 mark):

"Feeling Cocky" - Original Sketches

A little "behind the scenes" peak of the original sketches I did for what would become the "Feeling Cocky" figure (in his early days I was calling him "Hold Tight").
If I have a solid idea for a sculpt in my head, I generally don't spend a lot of time sketching it out, I'd rather spend that time working on the actual sculpt/final piece. So these sketches are pretty loose, really just visual notes jotted down to highlight pose, expression, proportions, and style. All of which would get fine tuned as I worked on the sculpt and saw how things looked in the wax.

The belt was added during sculpting, I loved the irony of it, and it let me do the almost phallic little strap sticking out (although that and the undercut of the hat gave the most problems when casting).
The sideburns were an important element I worked out in the sketches. I didn't want him looking too young, but wanted to do the sculpt very smooth and in cartoony proportions with a larger head. The sideburns, somewhat developed chest, and face angles helped combat the pre-pubescent look.

Balls. No Balls.

CHEERS that they had the balls to do this version of this character.

JEERS that they didn't have the balls to actually give the figure balls.  From Entertainment Earth's pre-order page:

"Removable black tape covers his nudity (don't worry - there is no "junk" behind the tape)."

Why? It's already an adults-only item (there's an "18+" right there on the package.) They had to tool up a new pelvis piece anyway (the previous figures of Brock have pants details clearly sculpted in). I think the tape is great for in-package, but once opened I fear it will feel flimsy and cheap. And I for one would have displayed my naked bloody Brock proudly without tape for all to see, but will have to think twice about that now if all there is is some sort of smooth neutered-ness.

Total cop out. Wonder if he has an ass?

1/6... 1/8 In The Cold...

You really can't keep striving for hyper detail and realism yet keep "glossing" over that one area. Good for World Box for finally sculpting in the ol' frank & beans on a figure like this. Could use some refinements - the whole front of the pelvis piece still feels under-sculpted compared to every other part of the figure - but a step in the right direction! Available for pre-order (expected to ship July 2013) from 7-Hobby.

(Two-fer) Tighty Whitey Tuesday

COARSE - Some day I would like to touch, hold, or buy one of their figures, or attend one of their exhibitions. Until then, pics will have to do. They are one of the early inspirations to me, for what became F.A.G.S. If you are unfamiliar with Coarse, check out their site and their body of work, well worth a look!

Gorillaz vinyl figures were released in 2006 by Kidrobot and Murdoc here showed up in briefs. "CMYK", "2-Tone", and "White" versions were released.

A guy in just his underwear is fun. But add some props and things get interesting!

It's Like New Year's...

You take stock of the year gone by. You contemplate all those #s you've collected in your phone. And you think, "Really? None of these worked out?" And you're left facing Valentine's Day without a significant other. That's how it was for me last year and during a mind wandering brain storm I had while walking my dog (where most of my ideas seem to take form) I decided to at least have fun with it, instead of being bitter. Inspired by the little Valentine cards that were traded in grade school (usually with Garfield on them) I figured I'd make my own little cards in that style, but that more accurately reflected the situation that I shared with the person who's phone number I still had but who, for whatever reason, hadn't become someone I'd spend Valentine's Day with. At most, it would be an ice breaker that could get me talking again to some of these guys who I had once shared a good time. At the least they'd get some funny little artwork on Valentine's Day.
Below are the cards I made and sent out, with links below them to the full size files. Feel free to upload them to your phones and text them out to the #s you've collected this year. And see what happens.

(The most common response I got was "Who is this?" Oh well... I have a whole new crop of #s to try these on this year...)

Bet He "Repeats" 2-3x a Day...

So the holidays are over, but I'm going to keep posting stuff like this as it's become a nice visual checklist for myself. And provides some blog filler in between updates on my own stuff.

Ya know, they might have gotten away with it if they hadn't put this image on the back:

They shoulda just put the button on his butt and been done with it.
